Historical Violations of Human Dignity

Human beings seemingly have always defined their group as superior to other groups. If they did not do so contemporaneously, modern thinking about divisions among people have done so. Homo sapiens are thought to have been superior to Neanderthals, for instance, despite the cross genetic fertilization that scientists have discovered. We all carry Neanderthal genes. Somehow we choose to ignore that fact in a fanciful quest for acknowledgement of our superiority. We have divided ourselves ever since into “ins” and “outs.” We separate ourselves by gender, ethnicity, nationality, age, language, race (itself a cultural concept with no scientific meaning), status (economic, social, cultural), location (housed or homeless), belonging (citizen or undocumented, legal or illegal), nearly ad infinitum. We are a species of division, held together with artificial and often stretched-thin distinctions that we treat as givens. These distinctions justify our atrocities against one another, our prejudices, hatreds, misunderstandings, conflicts, and even some of the comedy that may cause laughter within our group. Not only are the divisions destructive and mythological, they deny our own basic humanity, our own dignity as a collective.

In this section of the website, you will find various historical examples of human violations.
